IALC Member: Good Hope Studies is a member of the prestigious international association IALC (International Association of Language Centres). Regular and strict onsite inspections guarantee a high level of quality.
A choice of 2 locations: Good Hope Studies offers you a choice of two locations: either the suburb of Newlands or the City Centre:
- The language school in Newlands offers a unique setting in a quiet, green residential area with gardens and swimming pools, yet it is very close to shopping areas and public transport.
- The City Centre school is located in an up-market office building in a pedestrian area. At the same time you are right in the heart of Cape Town, able to enjoy this vibrant city.
Big AND small: Good Hope Studies is one of the biggest English language schools in South Africa. Our size enables us to offer our own student residence, student house, student bus and a varied entertainment programme. However instead of one big language school we operate 3 different premises, each with a maximum capacity of about 70 students. A smaller student number at each language school premises allows us to offer you very personal, individual attention and to accommodate your special needs.
A very special atmosphere: Students often comment that they especially enjoy the relaxed, yet professional atmosphere at Good Hope Studies – where it is both fun to learn and to meet people.
Over 50 nationalities: Good Hope Studies receives students from over 50 countries each year. We can therefore offer a student nationality mix that is unusual for Cape Town.
An own teacher training program: Good Hope Studies runs the internationally recognised teacher training course, CELTA (Certificate in English Teaching to Adults). This allows us to train our own teachers as well as develop the English language learning industry in Cape Town.

OUR SCHOOLS
Learn in a relaxed yet challenging atmosphere. The language school in Newlands is located in two buildings in an upmarket residential area. Here you can study in a quiet and relaxed atmosphere. At the same time you are close to all types of accommodation and only a short walk away from a commercial and office centre and more.
Exceptional facilities:
People learn best when they feel comfortable and relaxed. You will find the school buildings to be warm and friendly places in a quiet environment. Besides the usual learning facilities, you will also find an interior that creates a pleasant atmosphere in which to study. In addition to fully equipped classrooms, both school buildings offer break rooms where students enjoy free coffee and tea, computer-based self-study programs, free internet access for e-mailing and Wifi. Both premises offer beautiful gardens, in which classes regularly take place, as well as swimming pools.
Feel the pulse of Cape Town, the English language school is located in a beautiful office building in the pedestrian walkway of St. Georges Mall. Here you feel the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy the multicultural blend the city is so well known for. The language school is a short distance to the Metrorail and bus station. St. Georges Mall offers a lively atmosphere full of artists, shops and business people.

We believe that a language school in the city centre must fulfil the same criteria as a school in the suburbs. We have therefore chosen a location that is close to public transport, but more importantly, is located on a pedestrian walkway. Here you can study in the middle of a busy city without being disturbed by traffic noise.
The interior design creates a modern African atmosphere. In addition to fully equipped classrooms, the language school offers break room areas where students can enjoy free coffee and tea, computer-based self-study programs, free internet access for e-mailing and Wifi. At break times there is an atrium area for students to relax in.
ENGLISH COURSES
When comparing Good Hope Studies with other schools you may find that we are a little more expensive. However, please keep in mind that each lesson at GHS is 50 minutes long, while lessons at other schools can be 40 or 45 minutes long. Also, we teach in small groups of 6 to 8 students, with a maximum of 10 students.
Most of our teachers are permanently employed and have CELTA or DELTA teaching qualifications from Cambridge ESOL. The majority of our teachers have many years of experience teaching a range of nationalities and levels and they know how to make learning not only fun, but also highly effective.
While all this makes learning at GHS a little more expensive, it will ensure you the best possible progress during the limited amount of time you have available.
STANDARD COURSE

The Standard course is recommended for students who wish to improve their general English while having enough time to enjoy Cape Town.
STANDARD PLUS COURSE
- Description: Standard Course + one-to-one tuition
- Time: 09.00 – 12.40 OR 15.20
- Lessons per week: 20 lessons of 50 min. each
- Group size: max. 10 [morning]; 1 [afternoon]
- Course duration: 2 – 23 weeks
- Levels: Beginner – Advanced
- Minimum age: 17 years
- Availability: Newlands and City Centre
The Standard-Plus course is recommended for students who wish to focus on specific areas. In the mornings participants take part in the Standard course. One-to-one lessons are scheduled for the afternoon. The lessons are designed around the specific needs and wants of the student. A syllabus is decided on in consultation with the student at the beginning of the course through a needs analysis.
ACCOMMODATION
Your home away from home. Accommodation is an important part of your stay in a foreign country. At Good Hope Studies they offer a range of accommodation to meet your needs. Our accommodation officer knows the accommodation providers in person and inspects them regularly. The accommodation officer will also help you to make the right choices and is available during your stay to attend to your queries.
Generally, we recommend staying with a host-family as this forms an important part of your language learning experience.
If you prefer to be more independent, then our Student Residence is the option for you.
