Cyprus is renowned for its mountainous villages, crystal clear waters, sandy beaches, green valleys and beautiful landscapes, all bathed in sunshine for 340 days a year.
As a strategic location in the South Eastern part of Mediterranean and near the Middle East, Cyprus was subsequently occupied by several major powers, including the empires of the Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians Romans, the Byzantines, and the Ottomans.
Cyprus was placed under British administration in 1878 until it was granted independence in 1960.
The Mediterranean culture remains dominant in Cyprus. However, 82 years of British rule have left their mark. English is still an official language and the Cypriots drive on the left. There are two main English newspapers on the island, the Cyprus Mail and Cyprus Weekly.
Cyprus is a member of the European Union and the euro is the official currency of the country.
There are also many other exciting things to see in and around Larnaca, including museums, monasteries, the Mazotos camel park and the 18th century aqueduct.
