Oxford – City of Dreaming Spires
.
The University is very much at the heart of this ‘city of dreaming spires’. From the top of St Mary’s Church tower you can gaze out across the world-famous colleges – many of which date back over eight hundred years and their mediaeval architecture is breathtaking.
.
One of the most famous is Christ Church. It is Oxford’s largest college and provided inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’. You could easily think you had stepped into the world of Harry Potter as its Great Hall also doubles for that in Hogwarts. Walk across to New College and you’ll also recognise the tree under which Malfoy was turned into a ferret by Mad-Eye Moody.
.
The magical atmosphere extends beyond Harry Potter’s film set. Oxford is an important cultural centre – the Ashmolean Museum is Britain’s oldest, while the University’s Natural History Museum and Pitt Rivers boast a weird and wonderful collection of dinosaur bones and ancient relics. A visit to the Botanic Gardens of the University – again the oldest in Britain – is a must, and from there you can watch, or join in with, boating on the river in punts for something uniquely Oxford.
.
Historically there has been great conflict between “Town and Gown” – the city and the University – which led to the colleges fortress-like formations around a central quad. However, these days students are much more welcome! There are frequent student nights in bars and pubs, a great chance to meet people, and international students are actively encouraged to join in. The University’s Student Union, which some visiting students can also access through their college, is an excellent place to engage in discussion with fellow students. A weekly debate is hosted in their famous debating chamber and guest speakers have included a diverse range from Bill Clinton and the Dalai Lama to Clint Eastwood.
.
The city hosts an enormous range of cultures both as residents – there are an eclectic mix of restaurants, galleries and shops reflecting the multicultural mix – and as visitors for educational, business or leisure purposes. It is a wonderful place to meet other people and share experiences. Carolyn Llewelyn, Principal of Oxford International Study Centre, has been in Oxford for many years and seen students from all over the world come and go. She explains: “Oxford offers a very valuable experience for students academically, socially and culturally, and we have many students who come back again and again. We see a lot of people fall in love with this city and those who wish to go on to the University have our full support – it is hard work but a fantastic opportunity to study in one of the world’s leading academic centres.”

Atlantic Language Galway’s Junior Summer Programme

.

We specialize in customised courses for groups of junior students according to request. Our options for junior students incorporate tuition, accommodation, airport transfers and elective excursion and activity packages.

Students who participate on the programs benefit from the highest quality professional English language tuition provided by our expertly qualified and highly experienced teaching staff.

In addition, both the students and group leaders have the added advantage of maximizing their language learning by means of our host family programme. This allows all group members to experience life with a native English speaking family. In this way participants have an extra opportunity to encounter everyday English speaking situations which act as the perfect support to the language learned in the classroom.

Tuition:

  • 28 lessons (21 hours) of group English language tuition per week in 5 morning les- sons: Monday to Friday 09.30-13.00, and 4 afternoon lessons: Monday – Thursday afternoon 14.15 – 15.45
  • Class size – maximum 15 students per class.
  • 5 Levels – Elementary to Advanced

In 2011, Atlantic Language aims to distinguish itself from other programs and schools through the development of a unique summer school timetable which maximizes the amount of in-class and teacher contact time where students are actually learning and practicing their newly acquired language skills. By doing so, it is hoped that our school can establish itself as a premier academic junior international summer school, which places English language instruction as the most important cornerstone of our school’s ethos.
