Centre of English Studies (CES) was founded in 1979 by our Chairperson, Rosemary Quinn. One of the first English language schools in Ireland, CES has grown from strength to strength over the last 30 years.
In 2007 CES was voted ‘Star English Language School‘ in Europe with 4 or less centres by the Language Travel Magazine. CES is the only school in Dublin to have ever been given or even nominated for this award. CES was also nominated for these awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010!

English Courses
Standard General English language course in Dublin Ireland. The most popular course in CES!
- 09.00-13.00 Monday to Friday (20 lessons)
The Standard General English Course takes place every morning from Monday to Friday, leaving you free every afternoon to join the Social Programme or study in our Self-Access facilities.
Your morning lessons are divided into two parts and you will usually be taught by two different teachers.
In the first lesson the teacher concentrates on improving your accuracy, focusing primarily on grammar, reading and writing. The course-book is the basis for much of this lesson, with supplementary material taken from workbooks and other resource material.
The second session concentrates on improving your overall communicative proficiency and fluency, focusing on your listening, speaking and vocabulary and consolidating the first part of the morning. You will also be able to work on specific pronunciation difficulties and improve the language you will use in real-life situations.
Intensive General English – 26 hours tuition per week
- 09.00-13.00 Mon-Fri
- 14.10-16.00 Tues,Wed & Thurs
- 26 lessons per week of 55 minutes
On the Intensive General English Course, you will follow the same programme as the Standard General English Course in the mornings, plus three afternoon classes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, which gives you the opportunity to improve your communicative proficiency through discussions, topical debates, authentic materials and video.
The main objective of the Intensive General English course is to develop communication skills at an accelerated rate and to improve your competence in using English in everyday situations.
Our modern teaching methods and use of supplementary materials give you the best opportunity to build your language skills and maximise the benefits of the time you spend with us.
During the summer months (June – September) we also run special Conversation Classes that are aimed to improve students oral capabilities. This course runs on the same timetable and price as the Intensive Course but the afternoon classes are dedicated to Conversation!
Accommodation in Dublin
Homestay Accommodation*
One of the best ways to learn more about the people of Ireland and England is to choose homestay accommodation. Family life is informal and the people are welcoming, friendly and talkative, so you will have plenty of opportunities to practise your English.
Our homestays are carefully chosen by our Accommodation Officers and all homestays have been visited and approved by us. You will live in a house with a garden in a pleasant suburb close to good public transport. Students travel to and from school by bus or train.
Having chosen a homestay suitable for you, details will be sent and we would suggest you make contact with them to confirm your arrival time. You will have a light breakfast and evening meal in your homestay. Dinner usually takes place between 6pm and 7pm which allows you to join our evening programme or take part in some of our activities during the long summer evenings.
